about

A Classic Combo Jazz Sleeper

This is a great CD for anyone who loves classic sextet jazz. Clarinetist Allan Vaché and his brother, cornetist Warren Vaché, join with pianist Johnny Varro, guitarist Jim Douglas, bassist Frank Tate and drummer Mike Masessa to romp through 12 fine tunes in 78+ minutes, and every song is great. Recorded live at the America House Hamburg in 1994, this wasn't issued by Nagel-Heyer records until 1999 and still hasn't been discovered by many swing combo fans. Too bad Amazon doesn't allow me to give it SIX stars. This CD is that good!

Never Sounds Stale or Predictable

This album has stood the test of time by never getting buried very far down in my collection. The material is engaging, and the fine performances are captured very, very well--by that, I mean this album *sounds* great. The recording and mixing are among the best I've heard on a live album. I first heard a track from this album on a DirecTV music channel a while ago, and neither that, nor the samples that stream over the internet, can do the recording justice. This is one of the albums that made it obvious that I needed to broaden my horizons beyond rock and pop music.
